As a player : 34 caps for France between 1967 and 1972,
scoring 168 points and a Grand Slam in 1968
As a coach : Coached Italy from 1978 to 1981 and Stade
Toulousain from 1982 to 1989. Became coach of the France national team in 1995,
winning Grand Slams in 1997 and 1998 and reaching the World Cup final in 1999. Pierre
even helped to coach the English national team in 1989 to try and transfer some
of that French flair to the previously stodgy English style of play !
Pierre was
an artist in the way he played, and his turn of phrase below is as poetic as
his turn of pace on the pitch. I don’t dare try to translate word for word for
fear of ruining it, but we can read the strong influence of traditional rugby
values such as teamwork and conviviality:
Bien
cordialement
Pierre
Villepreux
