La Dune du Pilat

Close to the end of today’s stage I’ll be passing close to Arcachon and its famous landmark – the Dune du Pilat – a 100+ m high, 2.7 km long mountain of sand which is the highest dune in Europe. This is the first time I have been back since I was a young lad when Arcachon was the destination of our family holidays.

The 60 million cubic metre dune exists because of the nearby sandbank Banc d’Arguin, from where strong winds blow the fine sand towards land. This action also means that the dune slowly moves inland and its height is constantly varying between 100 – 115m.

Remember to hold on to your (or your kids’) hat when walking along the dune’s ridge – to catch it in that strong wind you’ll be faced with a fast descent and a steep climb back up from the forest as my brother and mother found out many years ago !

 

Proche de ma destination finale aujourd’hui, je vais passer tout près d’Arcachon et de son paysage célèbre : La dune du Pilat – une montagne de sable haute de plus de 100 mètres ( la plus haute dune d’Europe) et longue de 2,7 km. C’est la première fois que je retourne là-bas depuis mes vacances en famille lorsque j’étais encore un petit garçon.

Cette dune de 60 millions de mètres cube existe grace au banc de sable « d’Arguin », d’où provient le sable fin poussé par les vents forts. La hauteur de la dune varie au gré de la météo et petit à petit, s’avance dans les terres peuplées de pins maritimes.

N’oubliez pas de bien tenir votre chapeau lorsque vous marchez au sommet de la dune, sinon, vous devrez débouler la pente côté forêt pour le rattraper pour ensuite remonter péniblement dans le sable (harassant !), comme ont pu s’en rendre compte mon frère et ma mère il y a bien longtemps !!
