Histoire du Jour # 9 - Cap Ferret

La Dune du Pilat

Close to the end of today’s stage I’ll be passing close to Arcachon and its famous landmark – the Dune du Pilat – a 100+ m high, 2.7 km long mountain of sand which is the highest dune in Europe. This is the first time I have been back since I was a young lad when Arcachon was the destination of our family holidays.

The 60 million cubic metre dune exists because of the nearby sandbank Banc d’Arguin, from where strong winds blow the fine sand towards land. This action also means that the dune slowly moves inland and its height is constantly varying between 100 – 115m.

I want an ice-cream Mummy !
Remember to hold on to your (or your kids’) hat when walking along the dune’s ridge – to catch it in that strong wind you’ll be faced with a fast descent and a steep climb back up from the forest as my brother and mother found out many years ago !

Today's article is an interview with Australian professional cyclist David Tanner, who now rides for the Dutch team Blanco (ex Rabobank), after a couple of seasons with Saxo Bank - Tinkoff. David is currently riding on the Critérium du Dauphiné race, on which the third stage took place today - good luck David for the remaining stages and for the rest of the season:

What are your favourite training rides around Nice and Monaco ?
I have a few favorites, but to be honest all the roads are pretty spectacular.
I like to go into Italy and climb up around Perinaldo, Barajo, and stop half way through a ride for a coffee and toast. I also like it around Sospel, there are some great climbs around there to choose from.

How do you keep in shape over the winter ?
During the off-season or winter, I normally take 4 weeks off the bike, and slowly introduce the bike and gym after that. I'll have 3 sessions in the gym a week getting everything strong and ready for the next season and the bike miles we need to do in December and January. I've tried running but my body doesn't agree with that which is a shame.

What are your worst experiences on a bike ?
I have 2 that come to mind, the first being a bad accident I had in 2008 where I broke my leg, collarbone, fractured my back, and opened up my head..I was unconscious for 24hrs..it was hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel after that one. Also recently in Milan-San Remo, we experienced the most horrendous conditions I've seen (see photo)..I think a lot of guys were scared that day.

What are your goals for the rest of this season ?
To start with to keep on performing and improving as I feel I have been. I'm also on the 12 rider list for the Tour de France, so to be selected for that would be a big goal of mine (note - each team enters 9 riders), otherwise I will do the Vuelta in Spain. Finally, it would be great to get on the podium for some of the end of year 1 day races..

Do you ever get bored with all those long hours on the bike ?
I never seem to get bored anymore on the bike..each day of training has a specific purpose, its really just riding to fill in time..however I do enjoy stopping for a coffee and coke half way through a long day. If I'm on my own I also normally take my iPod with me which helps to stay focused.

What advice can you give to us amateur cyclists ?
My advice to amateur cyclists is firstly to also try and learn from more experienced riders. I don't think you ever stop learning about yourself or the sport. I think its really important to have a good breakfast before the ride and keep the fluids up while riding, also eating a sports bar or banana each hour. This helps keep the energy levels up and makes the ride more enjoyable. Depending on how serious the rider is I think its important to find a good coach and fine tune your position on the bike, because wrong bike position can cause injury in some cases.

Mud

Dax is a commune in the Landes, in the South-West of France numbering 21,000 inhabitants known as Dacquois, of which the one with the best sense of humour is Emmanuel (ex classmate of Laurence), who is lodging me this evening - should be fun !

Dax is a town reputed since ancient times for its thermal baths, and attracts enough patients every year to be classed the number one thermal destination in France ! Indeed the hot springs and mud are good treatment for rhumatism (I've booked my place for a few years' time !). This activity creates a lot of the employment and wealth of the town.

A legend tells of how a dog became the first patient of Dax's thermal baths:

A Roman legionnaire who had to leave for a campaign and could not take his ageing and rhumatic dog with him was obliged to throw the animal into the muddy waters of the Adour (river passing through Dax) in order to drown it and abridge its suffering. But when he returned he was astonished to find the dog in fine health, leaping around like a puppy. The reputation of the healing mud of Dax was born... Today you can admire a statue of the soldier and his dog in front of the cathedral.

Histoire du Jour # 7 - Marciac

The Marciac Jazz Festival

There are several well-known jazz festivals in the south of France such as Nice and Antibes / Juan les Pins, but the rather less “jet-set” location of Marciac in the rural Gers department stands tall with the best of them. Just look at this year’s 36th edition line-up which includes George Benson, Al Jarreau, Marcus Miller, Wynton Marsalis, Joe Cocker, Diana Krall, Robert Cray, Richard Galliano and many others, all packed into a 2 week period. I will be about 2 months too early to be able to take advantage of this world class event, which welcomes over 200,000 spectators each year – incredible considering the population of the village of Marciac is barely more than 1,500 !

Toulouse is a rugby town and today's article has been kindly provided by one of Stade Toulousain's most successful players and coaches - Pierre Villepreux. To rugby fans around the world Pierre is known as the pioneer of a certain style of attacking rugby and needs no introduction. For those not so familiar with the oval ball, his list of achievements is far too long to list here but includes:

As a player : 34 caps for France between 1967 and 1972, scoring 168 points and a Grand Slam in 1968

As a coach : Coached Italy from 1978 to 1981 and Stade Toulousain from 1982 to 1989. Became coach of the France national team in 1995, winning Grand Slams in 1997 and 1998 and reaching the World Cup final in 1999. Pierre even helped to coach the English national team in 1989 to try and transfer some of that French flair to the previously stodgy English style of play !

Pierre was an artist in the way he played, and his turn of phrase below is as poetic as his turn of pace on the pitch. I don’t dare try to translate word for word for fear of ruining it, but we can read the strong influence of traditional rugby values such as teamwork and conviviality:

The Cyclist’s First Aid Kit
Doctor Claudette Brunner is a dermatologist practising in Monaco where she manages to combine an extremely busy schedule with an equally extremely busy family life with husband Philippe (chief radiologist at the Princess Grace hospital and endurance sports nut) and their 4 children.

Claudette kindly advised me on the contents of my first aid kit for the trip – the initial list of contents that we came up with would have meant having to tow a very large trailer behind the bike :-), so we narrowed it down to an “Essentials” list to carry all the time and a “Back-Up” list to be purchased if required during the trip:

Essentials List

i) Taking care of the buttocks
Anti-chafing cream – let’s face it - the biggest problem for cyclists is what goes on downstairs in the shorts – its best to avoid getting sores by using a preventive product
Antiseptic soap - to use under the shower (eg Cytéal)
Antiseptic spray – If sores do develop, disinfect with Biseptine or similar
Antibiotic cream – If the sores turn into a boil then an antibiotic cream like Fucidine is needed. If symptoms persist, antibiotic tablets (eg Augmentin) could be needed

ii) Taking care of blisters

Second skin plasters – If blisters develop on the feet and toes, lance the blister (without removing the top skin, let it dry overnight and apply a Compeed in the morning

iii) Mycosis

Anti-mycosis– Prevent athlete’s foot with an anti-mycosis powder in socks and shoes, or use Amycor cream in the evening on clean, dry skin to treat the symptoms.
Don't forget to treat the shoes which are literally a mushroom garden !

iv) Risks related to the sun

Total sunblock cream, to be applied every 2 hours. Today there are several gel/cream based products perfectly adapted to sports use

Note that exposure to the sun can provoke an allergic reaction to certain medical products. This happens frequently in the case of anti-inflammatory gels. Protect the zone treated from the UV rays.

v) Don't forget

Anti-inflammatory – for muscular problems – carry tablets and gel like Voltarene
Assorted plasters, tapes, gauze etc – In case of a fall
Muscle relaxant (eg Decontractyl) for spasms, stiff neck etc
Paracetamol (eg Effaralgan) for headaches, fever, pain killer
Back-Up List
Anti-histamine in case of allergic reactions
Dermo-corticoid cream – In case of bad sunburn or insect bites / stings
Eye drops

Thanks for all this Claudette - hopefully most of the products will remain untouched in my bag :-)
