15. Geneva - Grenoble

Thursday 13 June 2013

147 km

Elevation gain 1,560 m

Riding Time 5hrs 42 mins

Average Speed 25.8 km/h

After the strong winds and rainstorms, today I cycled into a heatwave between Aix les Bains and Grenoble. By the end of the ride I was stopping at almost every café or service station to fill up my Camelbak !

At the Jardin Anglais with M.Rumpf and JB
I left Geneva hosts Paul and Muriel's place on the outskirts of Geneva this morning and rode down to the lake where I met up with cyclist friend Jean Baptiste, the former "Laurent Delahousse" of Swiss TV news, and Monaco consul M. Rumpf who set us on our way. Taking a different route to the one I had planned and making the most of the excellent Swiss cycle paths, we were soon out in the countryside. JB had to return to Geneva after about 1h 30m riding, leaving me to do battle with the steep climb between Frangy and Rumilly.

What a view ! Above Chambery
A lot of spectacular scenery and straight roads later I arrived at hosts Jean-Pierre and Marie, who live in St Nazaire les Eymes, about 10km before Grenoble. They are friends of my parents in law.

At the apéro I met Didier who does the underwater photography for all the BBC / Discovery documentaries - an honorary Brit - Félicitations Didier !!!

After the now customary huge plate of pasta I went to bed to reflect on tomorrow's stage - the hardest of the tour - to Barcelonnette :-)
