8. Marciac - Dax

Monday 3 June 2013

126 km

Elevation gain 1,466 m

Riding Time 4h 58 mins

Average Speed 25.3 km/h

Much better conditions for today's stage. A cold start in Marciac where I said goodbye to Jean Pierre and Nicole (whose son is an AS Monaco football supporter - a rare breed !!). The first half of the ride consisted of lots of short climbs and dips through the Gers. The sun emerged and soon warmed me up. The second half, as I approached Dax, was much flatter and faster. The best thing was that there was very little wind today - the first time during my tour.

Gare TGV (pour Patrick)
Quiet roads
Even the autoroutes are quiet in the Gers !
My GPS guided me along some very small roads and the estimated distance was very accurate. Nowhere near so accurate was the estimated elevation gain which was way below the actual figure - now I'm getting worried for the stages through the Massif Central !

I arrived mid afternoon at Manu and Lydie's place (Manu is another of Laurence's Business school chums) - they are not only great fun, but very thoughtful too - they booked a massage for me this evening :-)

Rest day tomorrow in Dax.

  3. Mark,
There is something wrong with your GPS.... you seem to have landed in a deserted area or maybe the last nuclear weapons training ground of the french forces. Check-up your Jaeger counter, take your bike and cycle as fast as you can in the same direction for the next 10 hours... If you still see nobody then go to the next laundry and clean you pair of cycling pants.... 3 times!

    1. Thank you for this very useful advice Pancho. I will do what you suggest tomorrow, in the direction of Cap Ferret - however today I saw lots of people and spent a good day without sitting on a bike :-)

  4. Mark,
Te voilà à la mi-temps de ton parcours. Félicitations! Je te confirme que la suite sera un brin vallonnée mais avec un peu de chances, tu auras le vent dans le dos. Fais le plein de gras de canard en attendant et bon courage!!!
    Bises.
